My post-pregnancy diet & 6 days left

As this pregnancy inches towards the end, I find myself constantly thinking about what my diet will look like once this baby decides to finally make her debut.  Let’s be real here, there is going to be at least 15-20 pounds that won’t come off when the baby is born and that’s ok.

It’s no wonder because my diet these days has been AWFUL and I know that getting back to a healthy diet will be hard.  Let’s take a look at a couple of the dishes I have been finding myself eating these days to give you some perspective:

Spaghetti Bolognese (with a side of garlic bread no less!)…so freaking delicious but not so good for your health or waistline

MEATBALLS!!!! 

Other eats have included: pop tarts, ice cream, pizza, brownies and the freaking list goes on!!!

Since my diet has been this terrible, I am planning on tackling my post-pregnancy diet in phases.  I am doing this because I feel like if I try to do a total overhaul all at once, I am setting myself up to fail.  SO, here is a general guideline of what the plan will look like:

1st week post: No changes, work on my new life with a newborn

2nd: week post: eliminate all desserts; no more pop tarts, candy, ice cream, etc.

3rd week post: eliminate breads & pasta (this will be the most difficult phase for me)

4th week post: eliminate most processed foods (including: granola, cereal bars, etc)

5th week (depending on how things go): eliminate dairy <— this is a hard one so I’m not sure I will take it to this level but if I feel that I need to go there, I will.

I don’t plan on counting calories at first but in the back of my mind, I am thinking that 1,800-2,000 calories a day should do it (higher than what I would normally eat but I plan on breastfeeding).  Again, if I don’t see any progress, the next phase will involve counting calories as well.

In short, I need to get back to eating meals that look like this:

Chicken breast with a side salad

Crock-pot chicken with pineapple, avocado, spinach, cilantro

Egg frittata with watermelon + arugula salad and sweet potatoes

I know it’s going to be hard but I am looking forward to getting back into eating healthy.  Working out is going to come more slowly so I am planning on focusing on my eating habits first.

It’s hard to believe this new diet will be slapping me in the face in about 6 days (hopefully)!!!!!

The doctor seems to think I will have a “petite little baby” so I’ve got that going for me.  However, I definitely think I will be at least a week overdue before anything happens.  #ShootMeNow

Any tips for getting your diet back into shape after eating poorly for an extended period of time?

I’m almost there and another baby shower!

In case you’re wondering what it must feel like to be 35.5 weeks pregnant, I think this picture sums it up quite nicely:

The good news is that I only have 4.5 weeks until my due date which means I will be pregnant for no longer than 5.5 weeks (my doctor told me they typically induce a week after your due date, thank GOD!).  I’m feeling pretty good about everything as I’ve somehow managed to get all my ducks in a row in terms of prepping for the arrival of this mini human.

However, I feel HUGE. And awful. And this needs to be over. stat.

I’ve had to put my gym membership on hold because it’s just started to get too uncomfortable to do simple things like walking.  Since I live in Chicago, I typically walk about 4-5 miles each day and you know what?  At this point, that’s enough of a “workout” for me.  I’ve also been pretty good about my eating these days; mostly because if I eat crappy, I get the urge to purge afterwards (I am back to feeling nauseated all the time).

In other news, there was another baby shower!  Not for me.  I threw one for my lovely friend, Leslie.  My apartment is quite small so it was a little cramped in here but overall, I thought it was a success.  The only thing I screwed up on was probably the most important part (besides the food).  Pictures.  I only took a handful of them and for that, I am sorry.  Here they are…

I had my husband make open-faced sammies with pesto, tomato, basil and mozzarella, they were quite delicious!

Those little tissue things in the back left are party favors (soap) for the guests and in the back right are the cupcakes (that I did not make myself, thankyouverymuch).  I also used actual baby items as decorations and gave them to the guest of honor as part of her gift.  In the above photo is a little rattle 🙂 below, I used little shoes (then you’ll see a few pictures down, the onesies above the fireplace).Image

Events galore & 31 weeks, eeek!

You guys, I have been one busy little beaver!  This post is going to be a total photo dump and if you are friends with me on Facebook, I apologize for the duplication of pictures.

I am on the auxiliary board of the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation and we had an event a couple of weeks ago to raise money for the cause.  It was a pretty exhausting day for me as I had to go help setup from about 10-2.  Then the actual event was from 8-midnight (but I left around 11:00).  Lots of standing for a lady who is pregnant!

The event had a 1920’s theme and it was held in the Chicago Cultural Center — it was a gorgeous successful event 🙂

Then last weekend I flew down to Fort Lauderdale for a wedding and my baby shower!!!!  Could it get any better?!?!?  I think not. 

The wedding was at a historical center on the river in downtown Fort Lauderdale and the weather could not have been better!

The next day was my baby shower and again, the weather was so perfect. 

My two besties (Rachelle & Iveline) took care of all the decorations and MADE all of the desserts!  These girls made cakepops!  DRUNK!  THAT, my friends, is what you call talent.

As I type this, I am about 31.5 weeks along, eek!  That means the babe will be here in about 8.5 weeks, say whaaaat????

Holiday photo dump + 23/24 weeks

ImageI made everyone stand on the porch and take pictures together.  Above are a few of the many I took.  The pictures came out less than stellar but I think everyone was over the moon about having to get off the couch and stand in the cold.  You’re welcome everyone!

ImageSince the doctor has ordered me to halt my workouts (more on that later), I decided to become one with nature and take a 2 mile walk every day in New York.  My mother-in-law informed me that I don’t “need to worry because the bears are hibernating.”  Hmmmm, maybe me and nature should not be one after all!

ImageAnother day we drove into Brooklyn (my in-laws live about a 1.5 hour drive northwest of NYC) and this was the only photo I managed to take.  Whatever.  Sue me.

In other news, I am already more than 5.5 months pregnant, HOLY SHIT BATMAN!!!  That means this baby will be here in less than 3.5 months, whoa.  Here are a couple of pictures that show me in the last couple of weeks (compare those to what I looked like at 13 weeks, what a difference, huh?)…

Anyway, everything is going along quite swimmingly save for one thing: I have placenta previa.  I won’t bore you with the details but I will say that basically my placenta is sitting low (on my cervix) which means that working out can cause some major problems for me.  This was some pretty devastating news my doctor gave me but you know what?  It certainly could be worse.  The doctor thinks that it still could move up which would allow me to have a regular ole’ vaginal delivery.  If not, I’ll probably have a C-section 3 weeks early.  Either way, I’m sure it will all work itself out 🙂

In the meantime, I will be spending all my gym-time walking on the treadmill.

Recent food stuff, treadmill workout and 21 weeks

Howdy friends, how’s life?

Life for me is jussssssst dandy.  If you follow me on instagram, you know that I recently shared a photo of what it looks like in Chicago (HERE).  It’s snowy, freezing and overall miserable.  But, on the bright side, at least I’m pregnant and feel perfectly content sitting my lazy rump on the couch. 🙂

I happen to be feeling somewhat like my old self and therefore, I’m not AS embarrassed about what I’ve been eating these days so I thought I would share a couple of things.  So here goes nothin’…

This is what breakfast has looked like lately: fruit, egg whites and turkey sausage with a side of english muffin

ImageLunch has been pretty boring, I typically bring a salad and then also go pick up either a soup or sandwich from somewhere nearby.  On this particular day, I made a spinach salad with dates, pears, walnuts and goat cheese tossed with olive oil and agave – I think I got a veggie sandwich on wheat from Corner Bakery as well (no photo because I feel like a weirdo taking pictures of my food at work).

ImageDinner has been all around the board including: chili, meatball subs, tacos and…PIZZA!!!  Seriously, who am I?

ImageDespite the abundance of shitty food choices of late, I have managed to keep my snacking pretty normal/healthy; typically, I go for fruit and yogurt (I used to eat carrots a lot but carrots are DISGUSTING these days, such as life).

ImageWorking out these days has also been a struggle.  I’ve noticed that either a) I am just too lazy to bring myself to the gym or 2) I am having one of those days where I just feel like dog shit.  However, even still, I’ve managed to get my whoopie cakes (according to the internets, this is another name for “butt”) to the gym about 4 times a week.  Last week I did this walking workout on the treadmill:

The other day this woman in the elevator at work asked me “I heard you are 5 months pregnant, is that true?” to which I replied “why yes, yes it is” … Apparently, I don’t really look like I’m showing which I guess just means I look like I’m getting fat, ha!  Actually, I think I look like I’m showing.  Here’s a side shot so you can decide for yourself:

Progress, recent eats and a workout

Hi friends!  How are you?

Things for me have been chugging right along.  My weeks have been pretty uneventful except for a couple of fun things that have been going on…Last weekend we went to go see Wicked (it was AMAZING) and this weekend my mom came to Chicago.  The highlight of the trip was a painting class we took yesterday:

ImageIn case it’s not obvious (which I’m sure it’s not), we were taught how to paint peacocks.  However, Bryan had his own idea of what he wanted to paint:

ImageThere may or may not have been people giggling as we were taking this photo.  I told him that the black stuff on the butt of the duck looks like poop to which he replied “NO! those are his balls”  ::sigh::

Anyway, in terms of my pregnancy, I have been making quite a bit of progress in the belly department…

ImageImageImageI still feel pretty awful which means I’m still eating pretty awful so I’m sure that accounts for a portion of the fatness protrusion in my midsection.  It doesn’t help that I typically take these photos later in the afternoon when the bloat is at an all time high but you get the point!

Here is a brief look at some of the things I’ve been eating.  As you will see, my meals are not very healthy but for the most part, they aren’t completely terrible either.

I have still been keeping up with my workouts (although they have been scaled back A LOT) and I thought I would share today’s workout since it was a goodie!  If you try this out feel free to kick this up or down a notch — however you see fit 🙂

I started with 20 minutes on the elliptical followed by 2 rounds of this:

For the Russian twists, squat jacks and KB swings, I used a 25 pound kettleball.  Also, the rope arm exercises got me really tired, I forgot how hard those things are!!!

Why I’ve been MIA and yesterday’s workout

Hi there!  It’s been a while, no?

If you’re wondering where I’ve been, let me break it down for ya…

That’s right! Baby Hanrahan is on the way!  Which means I have been feeling like total dog-shit.  I’ve been eating like I weigh 300 pounds and my workouts have been less than stellar.  On top of it all, my work-life has been nuts-O…So as you can probably imagine, blogging has honestly been the last thing on the planet I’ve felt like doing.

I’m hoping things will soon take a turn for the better…Onward and upward Tobias!

As you can see by the pictures below, I’m not really showing just yet, but I think it’s safe to say that it will begin to look obvious quite soon.  As of now, I think all the cookies, pizza and everything else is what’s producing the slight bulge…

12 Weeks13 Weeks 14 Weeks

 

In terms of my workouts, they have slowed down quite a bit.  I won’t lie, I can feel my fitness slipping away and it is something that I’m struggling to cope with because of how hard I worked for it.

However, I am still working out and I wanted to share with you the workout I did yesterday because I thought it was pretty good given how quick it was.  I started off with about 20 minutes of cardio (I think I did 10 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes on the stair climber), followed by 4 rounds of this:

1. Burpees with pushups x10

2. Russian twists x10 (15 pound medicine ball)

3. Kettleball swings x15 (20 pounds)

4. Plank jacks x30 seconds

5. Static lunge w/ overhead press x 10 (10 pound dumbbells, alternate your leg each round)

6. Vee-ups x10
