The Cleanse from Hell

Since I knew that I was going to start this “juice” cleanse on Sunday, I made sure to have a little bit of fun on Saturday.

I was too lazy to dress up but all my friends did and they cracked me up!!!  Leslie (pictured above) was a piñata while her husband dressed up as a Mexican who had the piñata stick.  She even made her own costume!  The lunatics pictured below (Brendan, Javier & Ben) dressed up as the guys from Semi-pro.  Good times.

Sunday I started what was supposed to be a 5 day “juice” cleanse that I bought from A Choice for Life.  I use quotations for the word juice because it was more like a tea cleanse.  It was awful.

Each day is supposed to look a little something like this:

Breakfast: Protein shake (provided), tea (also provided), fruit, juice, water

Lunch: Fruit, juice, water

Dinner: Tea, fruit, juice, water

I only lasted for 2 days (you’ll see why below) and for dinner, I instead had tilapia and spinach.  I lost FOUR POUNDS IN TWO DAYS!  The upside was that I really was NEVER hungry and I actually had energy…BUT, let me tell you why it wasn’t worth it:

1) This “juice” cleanse was a total scam (in my opinion).  All they give you is the tea and the protein (which, you make in advance and it sits in your fridge for 5 days, GROSS!!!!).  You have to buy all the fruit and juice yourself.

2) Speaking of the fruit and juice, do you understand how much SUGAR and CARBS they want you to consume?  I mean seriously?!?!? Most “real” juice cleanses are made up of a healthy mixture of fruits and veggies.  Not this one!

3)  THE TEA.  That tea was like HUMAN DRANO.  I am not even kidding when I tell you that I had diarrhea 5 times per day!!!  Since I work in an office where all the women on the entire floor share a 4 stall bathroom, this was less than ideal.  It’s no wonder I lost so much weight in such a short period of time!  On a side note, I also had a very hard time staying hydrated due to aforementioned diarrhea.

I followed up this cleanse with the Look Better Naked 2 Day cleanse which you can get for free off of the Women’s Health Magazine Website (here:  This one is actually pretty good since it involves lots of lean proteins and veggies.

Even though I had energy, consuming so few calories had me very weary about doing any hardcore workouts (which I usually LOVE).  So, because of this weird week, here’s what my workouts looked/will be like:

Sunday: NOTHING, sat on the couch and ogled my husband’s real food

Monday: 1 mile on the treadmill (pathetic) + strength training – legs

Tuesday: NOTHING AGAIN (coming from someone who works out 5x/week, this is just terrible).

Wednesday:  NOTHING AGAIN (are we seeing a pattern here?)

Thursday: 3.7 mile run

Friday: Yoga!  I was a first-timer 🙂

Saturday: 5.6 miles outside.

Sunday: TBD (fitness class?)

My sister-in-law and her friend are Chicago for the weekend so that should be fun!

Have I ever told you guys how much I love these little fellas?

Has anyone else done a disaster cleanse?

One Productive Mama!

Yesterday was so PRODUCTIVE.

I started my morning off by cleaning the apartment…so much fun, right?

Then I ran 5 miles averaging about 10:30 per mile, which is pretty good for me.  Scooby wanted to come with me but I had to explain to him that his legs are too short for longish runs.  Sorry buddy.Image

Check out the view at mile 3…

After my run I took a quick shower and went shopping! Yay!!  I got some pretty sweet deals, including this little number:Image

The Gators played the Gamecocks (and kicked their butts!) so before meeting up with the gang at Sully’s (Chicago’s gator bar), I made this awesome salad.  Artisan lettuce, walnuts, chopped up apple, chopped up figs, gorgonzola, drizzled honey and olive oil.  DELISH! Image

I contemplated getting these pillows for my couch but Bryan said it would be a bit much, but maybe I’ll convince him to buy them next time (once he is good and drunk).  It’s a terrible picture (after all, we were in a dark bar), but you get the point.Image

I thought it was ironic that there was this body shaping place across the street from the bar.  We all agreed that after drinking so many calories in beer, we should definitely hit up this place after.Image

Quote of the day “I always notice that you are losing weight because your boobs get smaller.”  Thanks honey but I was hoping something along the lines of “I always notice you are losing weight because your BUTT gets smaller.”  Ah, the joys of marriage!Image

Anyone else have a productive Saturday?

Weekend Rewind + This Week’s Goals

Saturday night we were having some people over to watch the Gator football game so I knew it was going to be a busy day!

My original plan was to run outside for about 50 minutes or so but the weather was not cooperating.  It doesn’t look like it in this picture but it was quite chilly and rainy here in Chicago ALL WEEKEND.

The Bean!

I am not a big fan of doing long runs on the treadmill so instead of running for 50 minutes on the treadmill, I did 35 on the TM in my upstairs gym and then I tried out one of those “Insanity” workouts; it was a pretty decent workout!  I might actually invest in a couple of the videos 🙂

After working out, I hit up the grocery store, got ready and spent the rest of the afternoon in the kitchen.  The gals that came over are vegetarian and the guys, not…so I was sure to make an assortment of different types of food.  The menu was as follows:

Baked eggplant parmesan

Veggie pizza

Pepperoni pizza

Guacamole dip and hummus with veggies & chips (pictured below)

I was a total loser and only took one picture of the food, I guess I got all caught up in the act of cooking!  I thought the night was a success with there being plenty of food (with somewhat healthy options), great friends, and an awesome game to top it off!!!  I know you guys are very concerned so yes, yes the Gators did win (and are now ranked #3 woo hoo)!

I suck at taking pictures so even though this one is all blurry/grainy, I am proud of myself for remembering to take it!

This week has gotten off to a shaky start with me having to work late yesterday so here is a snapshot of this week’s goals:

Monday: Run for 35, bike for 15 (check!)

Tuesday: 6 rounds of the following: 1/2 mile run, 10 push-ups, 20 squats, 30 sit-ups

Wednesday: 40-50 minute run in the morning

Thursday: Strength training

Friday: off

Saturday: TBD

Sunday: Elliptical for 30 minutes, body works + abs class

Hopefully my work schedule doesn’t get in the way!!!

Moral of the story? Don’t work…workOUT!

This has proven to be the longest week EVERRR!!!!  I worked until 10:00 last night (again).  Mind you, I get into work at 8:15 AM so needless to say, I have been tired.   The worst part about working late is 1) I don’t get to workout in the evening (which is my preferred time) and 2) I have to eat dinner at work which means…TAKEOUT!  Ugh!

At the VERY least, I actually peeled myself out of bed this morning and ran a quick 2 miles on the treadmill because I was worried about being at work until 10:00 PM again tonight, BUT…

Today was an anomaly!  I got to leave right at 5:00 and I walked my dogs as soon as I got home.  It was especially awesome because we went through Millennium Park and the leaves are changing 🙂

After walking the doggies, I decided that due to my crazy work schedule, I really should do a little bit more SO, while doing laundry I did 25 minutes on the elliptical while alternating various resistances.  It wasn’t anything crazy but I did workup a sweat.

This is me excited about wearing my Gators shirt AND having my evening to myself 🙂

Unfortunately, it looks like I will be working super late again tomorrow (I mean seriously? Who works late on a FRIDAY???). So, I am really going to try and get up early again to workout in the morning.

I hope you all have a better Friday than me!!!

Anyone else have stupid/ridiculous work schedules that get in the way of your fitness/health regimen?

Dreary weather = sleeping in (i.e. missing my morning workout)

Yesterday’s workout looked a little something like this:

I got the general idea from another blogger (I forget who) but, I ended up switching up some things to work in some abs.  It wasn’t a ridiculous/crazy workout, but it got me sweaty which is always good.

I was supposed to workout this morning but with the dreary Chicago weather, I opted for a bit more sleep.

Wavy hair, don’t care.

Today’s lunch consisted of leftovers from last night: ground chicken, taco seasoning, onions, peppers, jalepenos and avocado, all mixed up together.  It was nothing special but it’s healthy, easy and quite tasty.

We’re having a friend over for dinner tonight so I am probably going to get in a quick little workout before I stop by the grocery store.

This weekend we are going to Gainsville for the LSU @ Florida game so I’ve got to make sure I get in some decent workouts before that trip because I won’t really have time to workout while I’m there (and let’s not forget to mention the booze/food I will be consuming during the tailgating!).

Happy hump day!

Oktoberfest and I am SORE

Saturday evening we ended up meeting up with our friends at Chicago’s version of Oktoberfest.

It was held at this cool little local church (which I found to be ironic, but that’s just me).

I was pretty lame and mostly drank light domestic water beer, but Bryan did end up having some German beer.

Before we tried some of the German fare, we went to this tent where they had a band playing…I must admit, I was not a big fan of the music.

Beer = 🙂

Anyway, after Oktoberfest (i.e. Sunday morning), I was feeling quite guilty because not only did I indulge in some brewskis, but I also ate some pizza later on…EEEK!

So, in order to try and redeem myself, I did 15 minutes on the elliptical + this workout I found on, it was pretty darn good and I am quite sore.

I used 7.5 pound weights for most of the execises and it took me about 12 minutes for each circuit.

Tonight, I think I am going to aim to do some running on the treadmill plus some lower body strength training but we’ll see what time I get out of work!  Dinner will probably consist of something light and boring due to the fact that I don’t feel like cooking.

Anybody else over-indulge over the weekend or am I the only jerk?

All work and no play

So this week has been rough!  I’ve been working late every night which makes it EVEN harder to maintain my diet and exercise program (I mean hello, we ordered dinner at work last night!!!).

But I’ve been good when it comes to lunch.  My lunch salad for the last 2 days has consisted of the following:

Chopped up romaine, chopped up basil, garbanzo beans, hard boiled eggs, broccoli, red peppers, green peppers and of course, PICKLES!!!  It was quite delicious and only about 350 calories!

I’ve had it for the last 2 days because I didn’t want all the veggies to go bad.

In terms of working out, I have not been so good.  I’ve been wanting to wake up early but instead, I’ve opted to snuggle with this little guy.

But, I did do a quick 2 mile run yesterday on the treadmill with a 1% incline.  Better than nothing, right?  I don’t think I will make it tonight but hopefully I’ll get my butt out of bed early tomorrow morning to do a workout.

In other news, my mother bought me this green jacket from Old Navy in February of last year and the weather here in Chicago is just chilly/warm enough for me to finally wear it (please ignore the fact that my eyes are half closed).

Check me out ma!

Let’s hope the rest of this week flies by, I need the weekend to come already!

Weekend Goals

With the weekend upon us plus being in the throes of football season, it can be VERY difficult to avoid over-indulging in extra calories (namely, alcohol).  SO, for this weekend, my goal is to keep up with my workouts and avoid drinking too much beer.

I’ve got an added temptation because today, the finance department (which includes yours truely) is doing a bowling/social event starting at 2:00.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE leaving the office early BUT, I really don’t want to drink that beer!  On the other hand, I don’t want my co-workers to think I’m prego.  Aaah, the joys of being a woman, right?  So, I’ll probably just have one beer, problem solved.

Yesterday I did 20 minutes on the bike and 20 minutes on the treadmill + glutes and core.

Today is my off day so I opted for a lighter lunch.

I basically just threw a bunch of crap (spinach, chick peas, pickles, olives, lunch meat) together that was laying around the house.  I must admit, it was pretty good and was probably right around 250 calories, not too shabby!

Happy Friday!

What’s the definition of insanity?

To do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.

SO, I decided to switch things up for my last 2 workouts.

Yesterday, my friend Leslie sent me a couple of treadmill workouts to try.  Well, I tried this one:

Let me tell you, that workout was a doosy!  I couldn’t even do the whole thing, yikes!

Today’s work out consisted of me looking like a crazy person on the elliptical.  I held 5 lbs weights in each hand and just flailed my arms around (bicep curls, shoulder presses, etc.) for 30 minutes on that thing.  Awesome workout, I suggest you try it 🙂

This is me after the elliptical extravaganza this evening.

After doing the elliptical and working on my core, I decided to take a trip to the magical Target.  I ended up finding this sports bra for only $12.99, score!

Anyone else have some awesome workouts that I should try?

Love/hate relationship with the Dreadmill

With my sprained knee, I had to take it super easy running today (in fact, I was supposed to wait until Monday to run again but I COULDN’T!!!).

Anywho, I find the treadmill incredibly boring but on the upside, there is a killer view from the gym in my apartment building (I apologize for the blurriness but you get the point)…

You see the triangle-looking building that is shining in the Chicago skyline (below)? That is the white building to the left (above).  Pretty sweet view if you ask me.

So I ended up doing about 1.3 miles on the dreadmill (which felt awesome) and 20 minutes on the bike.

We are having a friend over for pizza (I will be eating fish instead) so I’ve gotta go.

It’s almost Friday, WOOT!
