Getting back on track

Happy hump day!

I hope you all are having a fantabulous (yes, that’s a word) week!

I, for one, am not.  I have not been so good in terms of eating (and drinking) healthy.  I’ve been really good about working out but we all know that’s only part of the equation.

I forget where I read this, but I got the idea to put a calendar that signifies how you are doing with your diet and exercise plan.  Here is what mine looks like thus far:

ImageYou basically mark off each day with either green or red.  Obviously, red means you have not been doing so hot.  Considering all the red on my calendar of late, it looks like I need to get back on track.

Truth be told, there has been a lot of this going on:

Soooo, this morning, I prepped for my day by making sure I had only healthful foods with me.  This is how the layout looked…

ImageI want to take a moment to talk about the carrot juice.  I found it in the store for only $4.00 and I thought it would be great for my morning smoothies.  The nutrition facts are pretty legit.  Note that the only ingredient is “carrot juice”…SCORE!

ImageI won’t lie, the first smoothie I made (spinach, pineapple, carrot juice) tasted kinda disgusting weird.  BUT, the next day (today), I added half a banana and it was delicious!  I suggest you guys give it a whirl because I had tons of energy after drinking it!

Let’s switch gears and talk about my weekend for a moment because it was pretty solid.

My friend, Indira told me about this running group hosted by Lululemon.  The running group starts at 7:30 AM on Saturday and they run for 65 minutes.  The run is followed by yoga inside the store!  Well, we were about 2 minutes late and the group left so we just did 4 miles on our own and made it back in time for yoga.  We’re planning on making it on time this week 🙂

On Sunday, the weather here in Chicago was AMAZE-BALLS so early in the morning, I got in a quick workout and then we went to go see the cubs!  Short hair, don’t care…

I think I did something to my left hamstring so my workouts have not been anything to write home about.  I did do Jillian Michaels’ 6 week 6 pack (level 2) and that thing was TOUGH.  But other than that, I’ve just been milking the elliptical and lifting weights.

In case you are on the fence about the Jillian Michaels’ workout DVDs, I strongly suggest buying them.  They are cheap, quick, effective and perfect for when the gym sounds miserable.

How cute is this lil’ guy?

Any workout videos you can suggest?

Grumpy Cat, daily meals and injury

Am I the only one who thinks Grumpy Cat is hysterical?!?!?!?

So today, I did pretty good with my eating plan.

Breakfast:

If you read health/fitness blogs regularly, you will know about this delicious breakfast scramble.  If not, prepare to be wowed.  Mash up one banana, 2 egg whites and a dab of vanilla extract.  Cook like eggs.  Then I usually put almond butter and fresh berries on top.

DELICIOUS

Lunch was an awesome tuna sammie.  I made the tuna with a dab of light mayo and 1/4 of smashed avocado.  I put it on a Flatout (90 calories!) and topped it with spinach, tomato and shredded carrots.  Man, that thing filled me up!

My afternoon snack was greek yogurt with some granola

Dinner was this awesome stuffed sweet potato that I found on one of the blogs that I read…Can I just say: AMAZE-BALLS.  You MUST MAKE THIS!

I worked until about 9:15 last night so I was sure to squeeze in a workout this evening.  I’m still battling knee pain so I’ve decided to (more or less) stay completely off of it for a couple more weeks.  If it’s still hurting, I’ll see a doctor soon.  My workout looked a little something like this:

30 minutes on the stationary bike followed by 3 sets of the following (all with 10 lbs weights where applicable):

Reverse fly x 10, 30 second plank, bicep curls x 15, crunches on the ball x 40, front rows x 15, arm pull/straight leg crunch x 15, push-ups (on knees), 30 second plank.

I capped off my night by snuggling with these little guys.

The Cleanse from Hell

Image

Since I knew that I was going to start this “juice” cleanse on Sunday, I made sure to have a little bit of fun on Saturday.

SHOTS!!

Image

I was too lazy to dress up but all my friends did and they cracked me up!!!  Leslie (pictured above) was a piñata while her husband dressed up as a Mexican who had the piñata stick.  She even made her own costume!  The lunatics pictured below (Brendan, Javier & Ben) dressed up as the guys from Semi-pro.  Good times.

Sunday I started what was supposed to be a 5 day “juice” cleanse that I bought from A Choice for Life.  I use quotations for the word juice because it was more like a tea cleanse.  It was awful.

Image

Each day is supposed to look a little something like this:

Breakfast: Protein shake (provided), tea (also provided), fruit, juice, water

Lunch: Fruit, juice, water

Dinner: Tea, fruit, juice, water

I only lasted for 2 days (you’ll see why below) and for dinner, I instead had tilapia and spinach.  I lost FOUR POUNDS IN TWO DAYS!  The upside was that I really was NEVER hungry and I actually had energy…BUT, let me tell you why it wasn’t worth it:

1) This “juice” cleanse was a total scam (in my opinion).  All they give you is the tea and the protein (which, you make in advance and it sits in your fridge for 5 days, GROSS!!!!).  You have to buy all the fruit and juice yourself.

2) Speaking of the fruit and juice, do you understand how much SUGAR and CARBS they want you to consume?  I mean seriously?!?!? Most “real” juice cleanses are made up of a healthy mixture of fruits and veggies.  Not this one!

3)  THE TEA.  That tea was like HUMAN DRANO.  I am not even kidding when I tell you that I had diarrhea 5 times per day!!!  Since I work in an office where all the women on the entire floor share a 4 stall bathroom, this was less than ideal.  It’s no wonder I lost so much weight in such a short period of time!  On a side note, I also had a very hard time staying hydrated due to aforementioned diarrhea.

I followed up this cleanse with the Look Better Naked 2 Day cleanse which you can get for free off of the Women’s Health Magazine Website (here: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/fast-diet).  This one is actually pretty good since it involves lots of lean proteins and veggies.

Even though I had energy, consuming so few calories had me very weary about doing any hardcore workouts (which I usually LOVE).  So, because of this weird week, here’s what my workouts looked/will be like:

Sunday: NOTHING, sat on the couch and ogled my husband’s real food

Monday: 1 mile on the treadmill (pathetic) + strength training – legs

Tuesday: NOTHING AGAIN (coming from someone who works out 5x/week, this is just terrible).

Wednesday:  NOTHING AGAIN (are we seeing a pattern here?)

Thursday: 3.7 mile run

Friday: Yoga!  I was a first-timer 🙂

Saturday: 5.6 miles outside.

Sunday: TBD (fitness class?)

My sister-in-law and her friend are Chicago for the weekend so that should be fun!

Have I ever told you guys how much I love these little fellas?

Has anyone else done a disaster cleanse?

All work and no play

Image

So this week has been rough!  I’ve been working late every night which makes it EVEN harder to maintain my diet and exercise program (I mean hello, we ordered dinner at work last night!!!).

But I’ve been good when it comes to lunch.  My lunch salad for the last 2 days has consisted of the following:

Chopped up romaine, chopped up basil, garbanzo beans, hard boiled eggs, broccoli, red peppers, green peppers and of course, PICKLES!!!  It was quite delicious and only about 350 calories!

I’ve had it for the last 2 days because I didn’t want all the veggies to go bad.

In terms of working out, I have not been so good.  I’ve been wanting to wake up early but instead, I’ve opted to snuggle with this little guy.

Image

But, I did do a quick 2 mile run yesterday on the treadmill with a 1% incline.  Better than nothing, right?  I don’t think I will make it tonight but hopefully I’ll get my butt out of bed early tomorrow morning to do a workout.

In other news, my mother bought me this green jacket from Old Navy in February of last year and the weather here in Chicago is just chilly/warm enough for me to finally wear it (please ignore the fact that my eyes are half closed).

Check me out ma!

Let’s hope the rest of this week flies by, I need the weekend to come already!
